What the cartoonists say: CCM presidential nomination race – part 1

CCM is in the midst of the presidential candidate nomination process. More than ten candidates have already declared and probably over 30 who will put themselves forward.

I’ve gathered up some of the best cartoons of the last few days, to see what they can tell us about how the process is going.

I’m sure there will be more good cartoons over the next few weeks, so consider this as part 1 of a series.

1. A lot of candidates, tough decisions, etc:

Mwananchi, 4/5/15 "Difficult choices" / "Are you ready for them?"

2. One candidate undoubtedly has had most of the attention so far:

Mwananchi, 25/5/15 - "The ban on campaigning ends today, yes?" "Was there really ever a ban?

Mwananchi 29/5/15 - "It is true you're planning to get revenge once elected?" "Do you believe that?" "I'm just a child, I know nothing"

I think this next one is my favourite, with (at least) three messages: Lowassa as a target, doing a balancing act, and vulnerable to what’s ahead. If he was flexing his muscles as well, that would be four.

3. Other candidates have had some personal attention as well:

Mwananchi, 2/6/15 - "Are you running, or going for a Best Minister Prize?" / "Who sent you?"

3/6/15, "Some say its time for a rich president, but its not right for a rich president to govern poor people" / "What poor person could afford to hire this room?"

4. Some commentary on the relative importance of different parts of the electoral / governance process and/or different actors:

5. And finally …

It’s not strictly a cartoon, but this seems relevant: the CCM official party bus for the campaign, unveiled earlier today:

I’m guessing there are some folks busy working on related cartoons already. And perhaps some opposition campaigners working with Photoshop as well.

Does anyone else think it looks like a grasshopper?
