UPDATE 3pm Tz time, 12/7/15: John Magufuli has named Samia Suluhu Hassan as his running mate. More details below
Here’s how the CCM Mkutano Mkuu (National Congress) cast their votes to select the party’s presidential candidate:
And in the previous stage, here’s how the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) reportedly voted to reduce the list from five to three:
In both cases the result is very clear-cut. John Magufuli’s vote share, at 87%, is a massive majority. Similarly, Magufuli, Amina Ali and Asha-Rose Migiro were a long way ahead of January Makamba and Bernard Membe.
Nevertheless, as an indication of the unexpected nature of the result, here’s how John Magufuli’s Wikipedia entry looked this morning:
The CCM Vice-Presidential nominee has been named as Samia Suluhu Hassan. In many ways, this is a surprise decision, as she is relatively unknown, but as a woman from Zanzibar, she provides excellent balance to the CCM ticket.
Her most prominent role to date was as vice-chair of the Constituent Assembly that sat last year as part of the Constitutional Review process. She is also Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office for Union Affairs, having been a Minister in the Government of Zanzibar between 2000 and 2010.
Her Wikipedia page is hardly packed either:
