Lowassa’s move to Chadema / Ukawa, in the cartoonists’ eyes

It’s been a busy few weeks in Tanzanian politicians – not least for the cartoonists. Here’s what I have gathered since my last collection, again grouped by theme:

1. The waiting game – will he, won’t he?

From before Lowassa officially joined Chadema and Ukawa:

Lowassa joins Chadema and UKAWA, but what happens next?

So finally it has happened. After being unceremoniously dumped out of the race for the CCM presidential nomination, followed by more than two weeks of will-they-won’t-they flirtations and negotiations, Edward Lowassa has been welcomed into Chadema’s embrace. With the other parties in the Ukawa coalition (CUF, NCCR and NLD) apparently in support, it looks like Lowassa is set to become the coalition’s presidential candidate.

As a former Prime Minister, Lowassa is the most high ranking CCM figure to switch parties since Tanzania introduced multi-party politics. He was many people’s favourite to win the CCM nomination, and this move has the potential to dramatically shake up Tanzanian politics – and the forthcoming general election. Continue reading

Winners and losers, and one decision pending: cartoons on Magufuli, UKAWA and Lowassa

Since CCM announced it’s nomination of John Pombe Magufuli as the party’s presidential candidate, the cartoonists have been busy. I have gathered a selection here, grouped by theme.

After the CCM Central Committee (CC) announced their choice late last night of the final five aspirants to become the party’s presidential candidate, a lot has been happening. Much of this appears to be responses to the decision to leave Edward Lowassa off the shortlist, in favour of Bernard Membe, John Magufuli, Asha-Rose Migiro, January Makamba and Amina Salum Ali.

Given the “breaking” nature of the story and the highly politicised context, I cannot guarantee every source is 100% dependable or that everything is quite what it seems, but here are what seem to be some of the key developments by 3pm (Tz time) today (Saturday): Continue reading

Person specification No.2: An opposition presidential candidate

The Citizen (?), 18/3/15

The Citizen (?), 18/3/15

Yesterday I posted the thirteen attributes sought by CCM in selecting their candidate for Tanzania’s upcoming presidential election. Today, a similar list of what the opposition – primarily Ukawa – should be looking for in their selection of candidates.

This one is not an official set of criteria. Instead it is the advice of one of Tanzania’s leading political journalists, Julius Mtatiro of Mwananchi. It makes for an interesting comparison with the CCM list. Again, the translation is mine: Continue reading
